Doug Loft is dead. The former English football professional has died at the age of just 39, as Focus Panorama and Bunte report in agreement. For the football world, the news comes at an age at which many ex-pros are only just starting out as coaches or experts – making the shock all the greater.

Who was Doug Loft? The midfielder played professionally in England, with his best-known stops being Brighton & Hove Albion and Port Vale, Focus writes. These are not clubs on the big Premier League stage, but sides from the lower leagues, where Loft left his mark over the years.

A family that must now go on without him

Loft leaves behind his wife and two children, Bunte reports. That makes the death of a 39-year-old especially painful: ripped out in the middle of life, ripped out in the middle of family. Former companions react in kind.

Former companions bid an emotional farewell.
