Hatchet at Netflix: Cianfrance Films the Classic

TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents Hatchet at Netflix: Cianfrance Films the Classic.

For you, as a reader of the book, that means: The material is landing with a director whose previous work isn't at home in the survival genre. What that concretely means for the tone of the adaptation remains open for now.

What's been officially confirmed so far and who's behind the project – I'll summarize that for you here.

What's confirmed about the Netflix adaptation of "Hatchet" so far

According to Variety, Netflix is developing a feature-film adaptation of "Hatchet," Gary Paulsen's 1987 young-adult survival novel. The report contains no information on release date, casting, or start of production.

What's confirmed is only: Derek Cianfrance writes the screenplay and takes on directing. This puts the main creative responsibility with a single person – for a novel that's been assigned school reading for decades, that's not a given.

Who is Derek Cianfrance?

Cianfrance has so far stood out with two films: "Blue Valentine" (2010) and "The Place Beyond the Pines" (2012). The Variety report names no further entries in his filmography.

What that reveals about the tone of the adaptation remains speculation. He hasn't yet directed a comparable survival story.

Who's producing the Netflix film?

Andrew Mittman is on board as producer. He comes through his company 1.21, which is already behind Netflix hit "Wednesday."

What you can take away: "Hatchet" is officially in the works at Netflix, direction and screenplay are with Cianfrance, production runs through 1.21. Everything else – casting, start of production, release – remains open for now, until Netflix or Variety follows up.
