The F-35B is a variant of the US fighter jet. Unlike other F-35 versions, the weapon is carried here as an external pod under the fuselage. According to Focus, such a configuration had not previously been photographed publicly on Italian jets.

What is known about the pod

Focus explicitly classifies the gun as a means of drone defense. The report thus describes a role that goes beyond classic air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The article does not provide further technical details – rate of fire, type of ammunition, or effective range against drones.

What remains open

When and where the photo was taken, how many Italian F-35Bs are to be equipped with the pod, and whether drone defense is officially defined as an operational role, is not revealed in the report. Italy is one of the larger F-35 operators in Europe.
