Anyone who owns a jailbroken PS5 can now launch PS2 games directly from the original disc. Kotaku reports, citing the jailbreak scene.
Anyone who has modified a console before knows the principle: custom software runs on the hardware, official restrictions are bypassed. With this latest move – making PS2 discs readable directly on the PS5 – the game library on modified hardware takes a meaningful step up.
What the community is showing right now
The homebrew scene around the PS5 has spent months working to crack Sony's locks. Emulating PS2 discs directly on the console is, according to Kotaku, a new milestone.
Support for PlayStation 3 discs appears to be on the way too.
PS3 discs apparently next
As Kotaku writes, support for PlayStation 3 discs is also in the works. The report offers no concrete dates, no list of compatible titles, and no word on performance.
What you should know before you try it
Installing a jailbreak violates Sony's terms of service. You lose your warranty, and Sony can permanently ban your access to the PlayStation Network – including purchased downloads and your trophy list. Anyone who experiments does so at their own risk.
