After just half a year, the trip into LoL's past is already over: Riot Games is taking the nostalgia mode League of Legends Classic offline in January 2027. The mode, which brought champions with pre-2013 abilities back to the classic Summoner's Rift, was up for six months — then it's done.

Well, that seems to be it for League of Legends Classic, then.

What Classic actually was

Classic was Riot's attempt to build a mode straight out of its community's nostalgia. On the old map, champions clashed with their old kits, joined by forgotten items and runes that have long since vanished from builds in the main game. A neat idea — after all, the original versions of some heroes aren't even playable in today's LoL.

However, according to Eurogamer, Classic was only "heavily inspired by the past" and didn't actually bring LoL back to any specific old patch. It even silently carried along some modernizations from later eras. Anyone looking for a 1:1 experience got a mix served up — old, but not quite as old as the name promises.

Why the hype wasn't enough

The launch hype was big, but for most, it faded fast. The Eurogamer report's author puts it himself: he effectively played five rounds — no more. "I was definitely not one of the players who kept the mode alive. With my beloved, old Soraka, I threw bananas on the bot lane and then happily turned my attention to other parts of League and life again." A classic one-and-done trajectory, as plenty of others apparently had it too.

Riot sums it up similarly: "We saw that many players had fun diving into the past with 'Classic.' By now, however, most players have returned to other areas of League." For you, that means: the nostalgia kick was there, but it apparently wasn't enough to keep people in this mode long-term.

What Riot is taking from the experiment

The developer doesn't want the insights to disappear into a drawer and announces: "We'll share more in the future about what we learned from this phase. That includes what worked well with 'Classic,' where we could have leaned even harder into the original style, and where holding onto the past too rigidly may have actually limited the player experience." That's a surprisingly candid bit of self-criticism: Riot acknowledges that clinging TOO tightly to the original style could have limited the experience as well. In other words: the mix of old and new wasn't just a technical compromise — it may itself have been part of the problem.

Last champions before the shutdown

If you want to drop in one more time before the January shutdown, you'll be gifted seven additional champions: Mordekaiser, Yorick, Hecarim, Lucian, Volibear, Urgot, and Udyr. After that, the door closes. What exactly happens to progress or unlocked content in Classic mode isn't clear from the report.
