Canadian writer Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. As the Swedish Academy in Stockholm announced on Thursday, the world's most prestigious literary prize goes this year to the poet and essayist. According to the "Tages-Anzeiger," Carson was "very surprised" by the decision.
Who is this year's laureate?
Anne Carson is from Canada and has for years been among the tipped favorites for the Nobel Prize. "Tagesschau" writes that Carson had already been considered a strong candidate "in the past" – now, after years of waiting, it has happened. Focus and Tagesschau confirm in agreement that the Academy in Stockholm announced the decision on Thursday.
What is known so far about the citation
The Swedish Academy has not yet published the official citation in detail. What is clear so far: with Carson, the committee is honoring an author who works between poetry, essay, and prose, and is known for her experimental language, steeped in classical antiquity. Reporting on the Academy's citation and initial reactions from the international literary scene is still to come.
