42.195 meters on Mars. That's the distance of a classic marathon. NASA's Perseverance rover has covered it in five and a half years—and has thus traveled more on the Red Planet than any other rover, reports the Spiegel citing the U.S. space agency.
Perseverance has covered more distance in five and a half years than its predecessor did in almost 15 years.
What comes next, NASA itself has made clear: it's hoping for more kilometers—and above all, for signs of life.
What the marathon reveals about the mission
Perseverance has covered more distance in less than half the time than its predecessor. This shows above all that the mission is advancing faster than any previous one—and that it continues.
What NASA now expects from the rover
After the milestone, the focus turns forward. NASA is hoping for more kilometers and above all for signs of life. Perseverance will continue rolling, collecting everything along the way that might one day answer the question of whether there are traces of life on Mars.
