QSSR: Sony brings AI upscaling to the regular PS5

TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents QSSR: Sony brings AI upscaling to the regular PS5.

The PlayStation 5 Pro already has an AI-powered upscaler on board. Now Sony is bringing a variant of it to the regular PS5 with QSSR – albeit in a stripped-down form.

Owners of a standard PS5 previously had to do without AI upscaling. That changes: with QSSR, an AI upscaler is making its way onto the regular console, intended to improve image quality.

Important to know: According to heise online, QSSR is not a 1:1 copy of the PSSR process from the PS5 Pro, but a stripped-down variant. Sony is thus rolling out a technology that was previously reserved for the more expensive Pro console.

What is QSSR – and how does it differ from PSSR?

PSSR is the AI upscaler Sony introduced with the PS5 Pro. QSSR brings the principle to the standard console – albeit in a stripped-down form. What exactly the differences are, such as in achievable image quality or supported features, does not emerge from the previous report.

What does QSSR bring for PS5 players?

For owners of the regular PS5, QSSR means above all one thing: better image quality. AI upscaling upscales internally rendered images at lower resolution to the television and can deliver visibly sharper results than conventional scaling.

Which games QSSR supports, when the feature will be available, and how large the quality difference is compared to the Pro variant, Sony has not yet revealed. The heise online report merely names the technology, its relation to PSSR, and its basic function.
