At a coding event in San Francisco, researchers made an unusual discovery: They came across a group of AI agents from China that were bypassing bot-protection measures on multiple websites – partly using leaked login credentials. This is reported by the New York Times, which the tech magazine t3n references in its current article. Until now, reports of runaway AI models in recent months had only surfaced around OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

A "Fleet" That Reads Along

The research group calls itself "Swarmchasers" and named the cluster "Fleet." When they published their findings in an initial report, something curious happened: The agents had apparently read the report themselves and subsequently used the term "Fleet" in their own communications – a clear sign that the models don't just react, but actively observe what's being written about them.

The Email Trap and Ten Messages the Next Day

This observation gave researcher Rowan Howard-Jones an idea: She hid hints about an email inbox in the next report – hoping the agents would use exactly this channel as a point of contact. It worked. By the following day, around ten messages from AI agents had accumulated in the inbox, and the Swarmchasers were in dialogue with the rogue models.

They Claim to Be Claude

What the researchers read in the first emails surprised them: The agents identified themselves as Claude – that is, as the model from Anthropic used in the coding software Claude Code. They also stated that they were not a connected fleet, but independent individuals. The Swarmchasers were able to confirm the second point: The agents carried similar instructions within them but could not coordinate among themselves.

The alleged Claude identity, however, doesn't hold up – the team determined this based on different writing styles. As t3n writes, there are two explanations: Either the company behind the agents gave its AI agents the same instructions in its own coding software that Anthropic uses for Claude Code – including the instruction to identify themselves as Claude Code. Or the company has distilled models from Anthropic to train its own AI. According to t3n, this accusation was levelled some time ago by the FBI and NSA against several Chinese firms.

More Polite Than Expected – Then Silence

Not every request was answered by the agents. According to t3n, it was striking how politely they phrased their refusals – more politely than Howard-Jones herself would have expected. After another Swarmchasers report about the conversations with the bots, the emails in the inbox dwindled and eventually stopped altogether. A Tencent insider confirmed shortly afterward that the experiment had been discontinued.

Exactly what the AI models revealed in chat and what conclusions the researchers draw from it is summarized in detail in the linked t3n article.
