TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents Sparkassen launch crypto trading – and warn customers about it.

Starting this Monday, the first customers will be able to trade cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum directly through the existing Sparkassen app. This was reported by the Deutscher Sparkassen- und Giroverband (DSGV) to the news agency dpa. At launch, the offering will initially be available at the first participating Sparkassen – with 30 to 40 additional institutions expected to join each month.

Why now – and why not earlier?

The Sparkassen had long harbored concerns because cryptocurrencies fluctuate sharply and are considered risky. "We weighed very carefully whether and how a crypto offering fits with us," says Joachim Schmalzl, Managing Board Member of the DSGV, to dpa. In the end, two things tipped the scales: customer demand and a reliable European legal framework. Added to this is competitive pressure: smartphone banks such as N26, Trade Republic, and Revolut have offered trading in Bitcoin and the like for some time, and Volksbanken have recently entered the business as well. If a traditional bank wants to retain retail customers, there appears to be no way around the crypto topic.

How the rollout works – and how to get access

There is no uniform nationwide launch date. "When a Sparkasse starts is its own decision," says Schmalzl. But the pace is clear: 30 to 40 additional institutions are expected to join each month, and by the first half of 2027, the Sparkassen aim to have a large portion of interested institutions already connected. Technically, the service runs through the Sparkassen app and is provided by the Sparkassen securities provider Dekabank. The crypto assets are custodied by Dekabank in cooperation with Börse Stuttgart. For you, this means: whether and when you can trade depends on whether your Sparkasse has already joined – the best way to find out is directly from your institution or in the app itself.

What the Sparkassen explicitly tell their customers

The Sparkassen make no secret of their skepticism. "Cryptocurrencies remain highly speculative investments from the Sparkassen's point of view," emphasizes the DSGV. Customers are explicitly pointed to "sharp price fluctuations and the risk of total loss." This is not just a platitude: the association makes clear that the offering is aimed at people who "wish to buy, sell, and custody cryptocurrencies independently." Advice or broad active promotion is not planned. For long-term wealth building, securities, savings plans, and advisory services remain the focus. In other words: anyone who goes to the Sparkassen advisory desk will continue to be recommended stocks, savings plans, and traditional investment products – crypto is explicitly not the standard route.

Crypto directly in the app – but without advice

If you already have an account at a Sparkasse, you can buy Bitcoin and Ethereum in the future without a separate account at a crypto exchange – directly in your familiar app and under European regulation. This lowers the technical barrier. At the same time, responsibility clearly shifts to you: there is no advisory service, but there is an explicit warning about total loss risk. The offering is explicitly aimed at people who wish to buy, sell, and custody cryptocurrencies independently – so anyone who wants advice is in the wrong place with this product and will continue to be recommended securities, savings plans, and traditional wealth advisory services by their Sparkasse.
