The Exorcist: Martyrs: Scarlett Johansson and Mike Flanagan's New Horror Film

TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents The Exorcist: Martyrs: Scarlett Johansson and Mike Flanagan's New Horror Film.

The 'Exorcist' franchise is getting a new spinoff – and it's a doozy. Director Mike Flanagan unveiled the first trailer for 'The Exorcist: Martyrs' at New York Comic Con (NYCC), starring Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. She plays a homicide detective who, according to Variety, soon realizes she's not dealing with a normal serial killer. Theatrical release is March 12.

IGN did a trailer breakdown with Flanagan right after. In it, the director explains how the film builds on the foundation of 'The Exorcist III' – so it's a direct sequel, not a soft reboot or a relaunch of the original franchise.

Who's involved – and what's the approach?

Scarlett Johansson takes on the role of the homicide detective drawn into a case that quickly spirals out of control. The trailer was presented at NYCC by Flanagan and Chiwetel Ejiofor. According to Variety, Flanagan not only directed the project but also wrote the screenplay and produced it – giving him full creative control.

How does the film connect to The Exorcist III?

According to IGN, 'The Exorcist: Martyrs' explicitly builds on the third installment in the franchise. In the trailer breakdown, Flanagan makes clear that the film carries forward the atmosphere, psychological depth, and connection to the existing mythology of the third entry – a clear signal to anyone who wanted to know which direction the franchise is heading.

When does The Exorcist: Martyrs release?

The film hits theaters on March 12. Watch the trailer in the meantime – and if you want to know more, you'll find the full trailer breakdown with Mike Flanagan at IGN, and the NYCC premiere report with all the key details at Variety.
