Mike Ditka is dead. The Hall of Fame legend of the Chicago Bears died on Friday at the age of 86, his family announced on October 9, 2026. TV network ESPN first reported it; no cause of death was given.
What this means for you: One of the most defining figures in U.S. football is gone — as a player, coach, and later TV analyst, "Iron Mike" shaped the NFL for decades.
Who was Mike Ditka?
Ditka won NFL titles both as a player and as a coach — and with the same team. As a tight end, he was part of the Bears team that won the 1963 NFL championship. As head coach, he led the team to the franchise's only Super Bowl title to date in 1985 (Super Bowl XX). In total, he racked up three Super Bowl rings (two more as a player with the Dallas Cowboys) and was twice named NFL Coach of the Year.
After his coaching career, Ditka became a well-known TV analyst at NBC, CBS, and ESPN. His direct, uncompromising style earned him the nickname "Iron Mike" — and, according to the Hollywood Reporter, inspired a recurring "Saturday Night Live" sketch.
How the Bears and family reacted
The Chicago Bears responded with a statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of legendary and treasured Chicago Bear and Pro Football Hall of Famer Mike Ditka." His family wrote in their statement:
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka. While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family. Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever.
The Bears thus lose a second franchise icon in just under two years — Virginia McCaskey, the Bears matriarch, had already died in early 2025. Jarrett Payton, son of Ditka's longtime teammate Walter Payton, made the death public.
As of: October 9, 2026, more details to follow.
