TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents NotebookLM creators fail with Huxe: Apple swoops in.

Apple acquired startup Huxe in June – according to mandatory disclosures the company had to file with the EU Commission because of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple counts as a "gatekeeper" and must generally disclose such acquisitions. Huxe is a company founded by several of the minds behind Google's NotebookLM – and has since shut down its service.

What Huxe built – and what the app could do

The EU documents say, briefly: "Huxe provides a mobile application that produces personalized audio content." In concrete terms, that meant: the app processed news, emails, calendar entries and any other topics into podcast-like formats that you could compile yourself. A special feature compared to the classic NotebookLM setup: the AI speakers could be interrupted mid-playback, and you could ask follow-up questions directly.

Three NotebookLM people, one startup that ended in May 2026

Huxe had been founded by the then-NotebookLM product manager Raiza Martin together with Jason Spielman and Stephen Hughes – all three had previously worked on the audio project at Google. They initially raised sufficient funds, but the financing ultimately fell short. Already in May 2026, the founders announced they wanted to discontinue Huxe. The services have now been shut down; all that remains is a homepage with thank-you letters to former users. On their LinkedIn profiles, however, Martin, Spielman and Hughes still list Huxe as their current employer.

Acqui-hire at an unnamed price

According to the DMA documents, the acquisition ran as an "acqui-hire" – a mix of company purchase and job offers to employees. The documents do not name the purchase price. Apple secured a license to Huxe's intellectual property; this is, however, explicitly "non-exclusive." Added to that is the option to make job offers to certain former Huxe employees.

What remains open

Whether and how Apple actually intends to use the Huxe technology does not emerge from the EU papers. Purchase price, scope of assets, official Apple statement – all of that is still pending. One thing is clear: Apple is specifically securing expertise in a field where Google has set visible marks with NotebookLM.
