John Wick as an Animated Film: Keanu Reeves Is Officially Back

TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents John Wick as an Animated Film: Keanu Reeves Is Officially Back.

Lionsgate has officially greenlit the highly anticipated animated John Wick film. Keanu Reeves has also signed a contract for his return as the legendary assassin. That means one thing is certain: the “John Wick” series is getting its first animated prequel.

Reeves Plays John Wick Again

Deadline reports that Reeves will reprise his familiar role. He has already played the character in the existing live-action films; now the same character will be told in animated form. In story terms, the project promises not a supporting character, but a film about the origin of the feared killer.

The project is being produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, along with Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment. They make up the producing team behind the existing John Wick franchise and are bringing those in charge of the film with them.

The Prequel Centers on the Impossible Task

Variety gives the specific plot: The animated prequel follows John Wick as he takes on the so-called Impossible Task – the assignment of killing all of his rivals in a single night. The film thus explains the origin of the titular hero and tells the story before the events of the first film.

IGN describes the same basic story: The film is set to show the assassin’s story before the tragic events of the first “John Wick”. All three reports agree that Reeves is returning and that Lionsgate has officially commissioned the planned animated prequel.

No Release Date, but a Clear Next Step

While Deadline focuses primarily on the production and Reeves’ contract, the other reports focus on the plot. No release date or further details about the runtime, animation team, and casting are provided in the available sources. One thing is certain: The existing John Wick is now being animated and retold as a prequel.

As of Thursday, further details to follow.
