Pellegrini ahead of Dortmund: ‘Betis is a great team’.

The fixture initially raises expectations of a clear difference in quality: Real Betis travel to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. But Manuel Pellegrini firmly dismissed that expectation at his press conference at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday. The coach described his opponents as very good — and Betis as equally brilliant.

With that, Pellegrini shifts the focus away from what might appear to be an easy task. His remarks were directed explicitly at the Cologne supporters: Borussia know that Betis is also a great team. For you, that means two teams whose coach says are both in good shape meet in Dortmund.

‘We are facing a very good team, but Borussia know that Betis is also a great team.’

Why Pellegrini is not downplaying the Dortmund club

His assessment of the opponent

Pellegrini begins his assessment with a level-headed view of his opponent. Dortmund are a very good team, he explained at the press conference. At the same time, he made clear that Betis should not be regarded as mere outsiders. Borussia know the quality of the Spanish club.

This is more than a polite compliment. Pellegrini describes a match in which both sides are in good shape. He speaks of an important game and hopes for one that gives the spectators enjoyment and delivers a good result for Betis. The illusion, as he called it, remains unchanged.

A game for the fans rather than a tactical wall

More creativity than tactical rigidity

Pellegrini’s description of the expected game is particularly striking. There are always very good matches in the Champions League, he said. Both teams, however, are more inclined toward creativity than pragmatism. He wants to see it develop into a good game for the supporters.

With this wording, Pellegrini does not describe a specific tactic or provide any detailed information about the lineups. Instead, he portrays the character of the encounter: entertainment should emerge, a result should be achieved, and the ambition on both sides remains unchanged. In doing so, he describes what matters in this game more in terms of the teams’ playing behavior than a completed tactical plan.

The following remarks come from Tuesday’s press conference at Signal Iduna Park. The match itself is scheduled for Wednesday at 9 p.m. at Signal Iduna Park. It is the fourth matchday of the Champions League group stage, with the first team facing Borussia Dortmund.

The 9 p.m. fixture is the hard anchor for the party

What you need to know

The specific framework is clear: Borussia Dortmund – Real Betis, Wednesday, 9 p.m., at Signal Iduna Park. At the time of the press conference, it was Tuesday. Pellegrini was therefore talking about the upcoming fixture immediately before the meeting.

His message is deliberately twofold: Dortmund are strong, but so is Betis. It grants the opponent respect without abandoning his own ambitions. At the same time, Pellegrini confirms that both teams are in good condition. This provides plausible grounds for a match in which neither club is automatically considered the winner.

The report contains no specific information about injuries, expected lineups or individual players. Nor can a serious prediction be derived from it. The most reliable facts are the fixture time, the fourth matchday of the group stage and Pellegrini’s conviction that Betis can play a major role against Dortmund.

Pellegrini’s conclusion: respect on both sides

Pellegrini’s remarks remain short and pointed. It is an important game between two teams in good condition. Matches in the Champions League are often very good, he said, adding that Betis want to perform in a good mood and with the desire for a good result.

For an assessment of the encounter, this primarily provides a clear perspective: It is not the opponent’s status, but the quality of both teams that is the central factor. Betis are not regarded as mere outsiders, and Borussia must not take the Spanish opponents lightly.

The result remains open. What you see on Wednesday at 9 p.m. will ultimately depend on which of the two teams brings its quality onto the pitch. Pellegrini’s press conference, in any case, was clear: for him, Betis are brilliant — and the Dortmund team knows it.
