“The Cat in the Hat” (2026): Will Bill Hader Be a Better Cat?

TVS News AI, editorially supervised, presents “The Cat in the Hat” (2026): Will Bill Hader Be a Better Cat.

Dr. Seuss’s chaotic feline classic entered the world in 1957. Roughly 70 years later, the new adaptation starring Bill Hader delivers another colorful animated adventure — but the reception among film critics is divided.

IGN calls the film “good but not great” and praises the portrayal of the playful Dr. Seuss character. The Hollywood Reporter, by contrast, criticizes the story’s “antic silliness” but misses its charm. For you, that means: The film apparently works as a wild animated romp, but in some reviews the Seuss charm is conspicuously missing.

What Critics Praise About Bill Hader’s Cat

Bill Hader voices the Cat, while the cast also includes Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang, America Ferrera, Giancarlo Esposito and Matt Berry, according to The Hollywood Reporter. IGN highlights that the film gives the character a good, if not outstanding, performance.

Deadline describes the debut as “delightful” and “long-overdue.” The original’s chaotic energy, it seems, has indeed made it through.

Where the Film Feels Overstuffed by Blockbuster Logic

Variety is considerably more critical: The film makes little effort to retell the original faithfully and instead adopts the look and plot logic of familiar blockbusters. The result is a “mish-mosh of pop recycling” — a colorful mix that loses impact because of its density of ideas.

The real point of disagreement, then, is not the quality of the animation, but whether the Cat should be more than a mere embodiment of Seuss-style eccentricity — in other words, a new character designed to work within a blockbuster format packed with as much content as possible.

The Verdict From Four Reviews

The film offers recognizable fun, a lavish cast and lively chaos. The reviews, however, judge the original very differently. Anyone seeking Seuss’s distinctive, pared-back children’s-book world could be disappointed. Those expecting a fast-moving animated film with prominent voices will get some entertainment — if not necessarily the charm.
